The Sentinel is an independent Canadian publication providing clear, sourced analysis on defence, security, geopolitics, and strategic affairs — with particular attention to the Arctic, NATO, Russia, and the evolving character of warfare.
It is written and edited by Jonathan Wade, a Canadian combat veteran who served fourteen years in the Canadian Armed Forces (2000–2014). During that time he deployed to Afghanistan in 2009 as part of an Operational Mentor and Liaison Team (OMLT) embedded with the Afghan National Army, advising and fighting alongside Afghan soldiers in Kandahar province.

After leaving the military, Jonathan has maintained a continuous, in-depth focus on Russian military affairs, Arctic security, geopolitics, and NATO. He speaks French, English and is currently learning Russian.
